Employment of physician assistants is expected to grow by 41 percent from 2011 to 2021, much faster than the average for all medical occupations. The projected rapid job growth for physician assistants reflects the expansion of healthcare facilities and an over all emphasis on medical treatment cost containment, which is cause for increased use of PA's by healthcare companies, medical clinics, hospitals and private physician practices.

Private Physicians and hospitals are expected to employ more PA's to provide primary care and to assist with medical and surgical procedures because physician assistants are considerably more cost-effective than a physician. Physician assistants can relieve physicians of routine duties and procedures which often times raises the over all cost of medical treatment. Healthcare and medical providers will continue to employ more physician assistants as States expand their scope of services by allowing them to perform more medical procedures and prescribe certain medications. Physician Assistants can work in traditional office based physician type settings as well as find a growing number of jobs in institutional settings such as hospitals, university medical centers and acute care clinics. Job opportunities for PA's should be superior, particularly in rural and inner city health clinics because these medical settings have difficulty attracting and retaining physicians. Opportunities will be best in States that allow a PA a wider scope of practice making them more productive and valuable to employers and the communities they serve.
