Physicians held approximately 672,420 jobs in 2011. Of those, approximately thirteen percent were self employed in a private practice. About fifty two percent of physicians worked in offices of private practice physicians, and twenty two percent of physicians and surgeons were employed by hospitals. Other physicians practice in and for Federal, State, and local governments, educational and university services as well as outpatient care centers and urgent care facilities. According to 2011 data from the American Medical Association (AMA), thirty four percent of physicians in patient care were in primary care. An increasingly large number of physicians are partners or salaried employees of group and private physician practices. Private physician practices can be organized as clinics or as associations of physicians, medical care groups can often afford expensive medical equipment, share support staff, and benefit from other economical advantages. The New England and Middle Atlantic regions have the highest ratios of physicians to population; the South Central and Mountain regions have the lowest. Physicians are likely to locate in urban or high population areas, close to hospitals and medical education centers. Recent data shows that almost seventy five percent of physicians in patient care are located in metropolitan areas while the remaining twenty five percent are working in rural areas of our county.
